My name is Leroy Fontaine and I am part of the Denesuline Tribe and a proud member of Chipewyan Prairie First Nation. Growing up in the Treaty 8 Territory Of Northern Alberta, I spent the earlier part of my childhood on the reservation with my family before moving to Fort McMurray to pursue sports and education.
As a young man growing up in an environment filled with countless reasons to quit before I even started, I somehow found the courage to dream big no matter the adversity. I chose to move to Fort McMurray to go to school and chase the dream of becoming a professional athlete. While my path had begun on this journey, I faced countless barriers every step of the way that I was forced to navigate. Regardless of these constant hurdles, flash forward years later to entering the 2010 CFL draft, attaining two college diploma’s and a bachelors degree, I proved to myself that anything is possible. I am now a proud career firefighter of 10 years and an active advocate of Indigenous culture in the workplace.
Over the course of my adult life as I entered into new milestones, my work in the community on a local and national level has always been my driving inspiration. Being that positive role model in everything I do and leading by example was, and always will be my ongoing mission. A signal of hope for Indigenous people to chase their dreams in the face of adversity.
